We’ve all been there—holding onto that favorite concealer, mascara, or bronzer way past its prime because, let’s be honest, replacing makeup every few months is expensive. But did you know that expired beauty products can be more than just a waste of money? They can also lead to skin irritation, breakouts, and even infections. The good news? You don’t have to throw everything out right away. At Glou Beauty, we’re all about sustainable beauty—saving money, reducing waste, and making conscious beauty choices. Let’s dive into what you really need to know about expired makeup, and how to extend its life safely.

What You Need to Know About Your Concealer, Foundation & Base Makeup

Your base makeup products might look fine, but they have a hidden expiration date. Over time, bacteria build-up, ingredient breakdown, and exposure to air can make your go-to foundation or concealer less effective—or worse, irritating to your skin.

General Shelf Life Guidelines:

🕒 Concealer: 6–12 months

🕒 Foundation: 12–18 months (shorter if it’s water-based)

🕒 Powder products: 2+ years (if kept clean and dry!)

💡 Pro tip: If your foundation starts to separate, smells weird, or doesn’t blend as well as it used to, it’s probably expired.

But what about makeup you never even opened? Instead of letting it expire on your shelf, consider rehoming it through Glou Beauty's Program! It’s a great way to keep beauty products in use and out of landfills. 🌍♻️

Expired Mascara, Lip Gloss & Liquid Beauty Products: Are They Really That Bad?

Mascaras, lip glosses, and other liquid beauty products applied with a wand are some of the hardest products to recycle (we’ll show you why in another post!), but they also have some of the shortest lifespans. Why? Every time you dip the applicator back into the tube, you introduce bacteria. Over time, this can lead to infections and irritation.

🚨 Expiration Guidelines:

🕒 Mascara: 3–6 months

🕒 Lip Gloss: 6–12 months

🕒 Liquid eyeliner: 3–6 months

How to Make Mascaras, Lipglosses, and other Liquid Beauty Products Last (Safely!):

Close tightly after each use to prevent drying out.

Store in a cool, dry place—heat speeds up bacteria growth!

Stop pumping your mascara wand! It pushes in air, making it dry out faster.

If it smells weird, feels clumpy, or separates—it’s time to toss!

💡 Sustainable Tip: Since these products are tough to recycle, the best move is buying only what you need, when you need it to cut down on unnecessary waste.
